Shota Rustaveli wrote the epic Georgian poem, The Knight in the Panther’s Skin, in the 12th century after having been exiled to Jerusalem.
The poem’s ornate manuscripts constitute some of the most significant Georgian secular works of art dating from the Middle Ages.
Mihály Zichy, a Hungarian graphic artist, was commissioned to illustrate the poem. The publishers selected 27 of his illustrations and, since he had been so overwhelmed by the original poem, he subsequently refused to accept payment for his work, and donated his works to the Georgian people.
